Title and date: Winter Fields, 1959
Size of picture: 38 x 61 cms.
Description: a subtle oil on canvas with a gentle palette, lovely mark making and strong sense of perspective, the watery winter sun barely standing out against the snowy scene.
There is a further complete and similarly evocative oil painting on the reverse showing a wharf side crane, typical of the Thames at the time, with wonderful water effects.
The print is numbered 341 from the ‘Hertfordshire Schools Art Loan Collection’ formed from 1949 and discontinued in 2017.

Artist description:
A painter, designer and draughtsman, Thomas Swimmer was born in Dieppe and from 1948 to 1950, he studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art under lan MacNab. He then spent 6 years at the Royal Academy Schools winning the Academy’s Gold Medal in 1955 and the Students’ Diploma in 1956. For a while he worked for BBC television. In 1963 and 1964 Shell/BP published their series of 48 ‘Shilling Guides’ using the leading commercial artists of the day and the ‘South Coast Guide’ was illustrated by Swimmer. He showed at the Royal Academy, the Redfern and Piccadilly Galleries and his work was bought by Leicester City Council.
