Description
Artist Description:
Robert Stewart, the Scottish artist and designer, was a contemporary of Lucienne Day and one of the few designers whom she admired; together they pioneered modern British textile design after the Second World War. A prolific worker, Stewart produced tapestries, paintings, ceramics, graphics, and murals but it is his textile designs that have been the most influential, in particular those produced by Pringle, Liberty and Donald Brothers in the 1950s. Stewart’s time was divided between teaching at the Glasgow School of Art – where he taught for 35 years – and producing his innovative designs for textiles and ceramics.
