Artist description:

A painter and superb wood engraver, John O’Connor was born in Leicester in 1913 where he attended the College of Art from 1931-34. He studied at the Royal College of Art from 1934-37 where his tutors included Eric Ravilious, John Nash and Robert Austin.

His teaching career began at Birmingham College of Art in 1937 then Bristol College of Art from 1938-41. After war service in the Royal Air Force, O’Connor taught at Hastings School of Art before becoming principal of Colchester School of Art in 1948-1964. He was a visiting lecturer at St Martin’s School of Art from 1964-1975 and from 1977-1984 at Glasgow School of Art.

He was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1947, and in 1974, to the Royal Watercolour Society. He illustrated many books and contributed to Harper’s Bazaar, House and Garden and the Radio Times; until 2001 he produced a monthly wood engraving for the Oldie magazine. He had many solo shows including at Zwemmer Gallery from 1955-1968; New Grafton Gallery from 1970 and retrospectives at the Mackintosh Museum, Glasgow in 1999. The Arts Council, Tate Gallery and the British Museum all hold examples of his work.
