Description

Artist description:

A draughtsman, painter and printmaker, Henry Holzer was born in Tottenham, the son of a Viennese-born lithographer to whom he was apprenticed after leaving school. He studied at London and Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Regent Street Polytechnic before teaching at Hornsey College of Art. During the war he produced camouflage work and after VE Day, lithographs of anti-doodlebug defences on the Suffolk coast. After the war he resumed his teaching at Hornsey where he was Head of Printmaking until his retirement in 1968.

He worked regularly with his colleague Allin Braund on lithography and etching. All of Holzer’s leisure time was spent painting and drawing, from quiet London streets and river scenes along the Thames and Wye to the Norfolk countryside. He became registered blind in 1993 but continued to paint and draw. He exhibited regularly in London including at the Royal Academy; Redfern and Piccadilly Galleries, and his work is held in many collections including the Government Art Collection and the British Museum.
