George Enslin was born in Richmond, Surrey in 1919. His father was chaplain with the South African Forces during the First World War and the family came to settle at Elgin, Cape Town. In 1946, George Enslin studied under Maurice van Essche at the Continental School of Art, in Cape Town. Enslin travelled to many parts of the world by caravan and yacht. He was an itinerant painter who pitched camp and travelled wherever the mood took him. George Enslin’s theme was landscape, which he handled in a brisk and spontaneous fashion which reflects its author’s breezy personality. He held his first solo exhibition in Cape Town in 1948 and continued to exhibit in South Africa for the remainder of his life.
