Artist description:
Richard Willis was born in London, educated at Harrow and lived in Somerset at a manor house in Greenham Barton, the subject of the works offered here. At 16, he was honoured as the youngest ever exhibitor at the Royal Academy, where two of his works are hung, he later studied art at Reading University under Anthony Betts. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNVR) where he was involved in landing American tanks on D-Day.
His Royal Navy experience formed the basis for a successful career as a marine artist, many of his works have been reproduced as prints. His work has been shown in mixed exhibitions, including with the London Group and the New English Art Club, and he has had several solo exhibitions including in Bath in the late 1950s and early 1960s, where he also ran an art gallery.
