Artist description:
A painter born in Abergele, North Wales, Sargeant spent most of his younger days in London. He assisted in designing and painting stage sets for productions including at the London Palladium, Sadlers Wells, the Royal Festival Hall and Covent Garden.
He held his first solo exhibition in 1961 at the Edinburgh Festival then exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; at Kings College Arts Festival in 1962 and 1964; Richmond Gallery, London, 1963, Durham University, Fine Art Society, 1965, Mowbray Gallery, Sunderland, 1965 and the Traverse Gallery, Edinburgh, 1965.
In 1968, Sargeant was appointed Lecturer in Television and Graphic Design in The Audio Visual Centre, University of Hull and was promoted to University Designer, retiring in 1984 because of ill health. By 1995 visual impairment necessitated his being registered blind.
