A dynamic painting by one of our favourite artists, reflecting Garrick Palmer’s distinctive geometric and abstract style developed during a highly creative period in the 1960s. The landscape was influenced by the South Downs in Hampshire and Sussex. The painting is signed and dated 1960, and is newly framed.

Description

Artist description:

A painter and printmaker of great originality and with a highly distinctive style. He was born in Portsmouth in 1933 and has remained in that area. He has illustrated numerous books with fine wood engravings and his work is held in many private and public collections. He has held many exhibitions beginning with RA Summer Exhibitions in 1956, 57, 58 and 1960.

He studied at Portsmouth College of Art and Design (1951-55) and then at the Royal Academy Schools (1955-59). He was awarded the David Murray Landscape Scholarship for three years between 1955 and 1957, the Leverhulme Scholarship and the RA Gold Medal and the Edwards Scott Travelling Scholarship in 1958.

He taught at Winchester School of Art from 1958-86 and became Head of the Foundation Department. He retired in December 1986 and has since devoted himself full-time to his art. Since the early 1980s he has had a second career as a photographer, and beginning in 1983, he has had numerous commissions and exhibitions.

Garrick Palmer is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, the Society of Wood Engravers, Associate of the Royal Engravers, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
