Artist description:

Serge Labégorre is one of the greatest contemporary French expressionist painters and remains still very active. Born near Bordeaux, Serge Labégorre studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris between 1951 and 1956 and quickly began to exhibit in France and elsewhere. In 1968, his work was noticed while exhibiting at the Chichester International Festival, and it is likely that this painting originates from this period. Two years later, Labégorre left his post at Lycée Louis Barthou in Pau, where he taught drawing, to devote himself entirely to artwork. Since then, living and working in Gironde close to Libourne, the subject of this painting, his reputation has grown steadily.

Today, his works are exhibited in many galleries including in New York, Brussels, Geneva, London, Paris, Porto and Tokyo. His work, widely recognized, has earned him several prestigious awards including the badge of Knight of the Legion of Honor (2009) and the Painting Grand Prix of the Taylor Foundation in Paris in 2012. In May 2014, the wife and Serge Labégorre’s daughters and several collectors create the Serge Labégorre Endowment Fund. A building was inaugurated in November of the same year in Seignosse, seaside resort on the Aquitaine side, to accommodate the fund’s assets. This structure aims to preserve and exhibit the works of the painter, but also those of other artists.
