An unframed colour lithograph in excellent condition from the ‘Coronation Series’, a group of 40 prints by 36 artists commissioned to record the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953; the works were printed at the Royal College of Art in London.

Artist description:
A painter born Hammersmith, west London, Ruskin Spear in Hammersmith won a scholarship to Hammersmith School of Art in 1926 and then to the RCA from 1931-35. He was an accomplished portrait painter and his sitters included John Betjeman, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Harold Wilson and Francis Bacon. He was exempted from military service due to childhood polio Spear and participated in the ‘Recording Britain’ series. He taught at Croydon, Hammersmith and the Royal College of Art from 1948-1975. Spear was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1944 and a full member in 1954. The Royal Academy awarded him a retrospective exhibition at Burlington House in 1980. Many of his paintings can be seen in public collections including the BBC, the Palace of Westminster and the Tate Gallery.
