Artist description:

A landscape painter, photographer, draughtsman and art critic, Denis Mathews was born in Hampstead, the son of Richard George Mathews, a Canadian artist. After attending Highgate School, he spent studied Medicine at London University from 1930-33 but appears to have ‘dropped out’ and took up art studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1935-36. During the Second World War, he worked as a medical artist and from 1945-46 he held the post of Secretary at the Contemporary Art Society. Mathews travelled widenyl including in France, China and Morocco.

His first solo exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries in 1947 and he also showed with the London Group, Redfern Gallery and Thomas Agnew. Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Bartley Drey Gallery in 1994 and another at Y Tabernacl, Machynlleth in 1997. Examples of his work are held by the Government Art Collection, Imperial War Museum and Tate Gallery.
