Artist description:

Edwin La Dell was born in Coventry and studied at Sheffield College of Art. In 1935 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where his tutors included Robert Austin, Barnett Freedman, Percy Horton and John Nash. During the Second World War he was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to work on public murals. After the war he was commissioned by Lyons for their three lithograph series, displayed in their tea shops nationwide; for the Guinness sets which were intended to brighten cafeterias, bars and public houses and contributed to the ‘Pictures for Schools’ series. He was Head of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art from 1955-1970 and was instrumental in raising the appeal of printmaking. He illustrated books for the Folio Society, Faber and Faber and John Mills. His work is held in many collections including the Royal Academy, the Tate Gallery, the V&A and the Government Art Collection.
