Artist description: Born in Stepney Edward Hughes left school aged 14 and began working at the Evening Post newspaper. His creativity was spotted and he was sent to St Martin’s College of Art to take a course in calligraphy. After the Second World War, Hughes returned to London and to St Martin’s as a full time student. He later went on to the Royal College of Art where his love of linocut was encouraged by his tutor Edward Bawden. Hughes returned to St Martin’s to teach for several years before leaving London in 1953 to set up home and a new studio in East Farleigh, Kent. Hughes continued to make prints and to pursue a successful career in illustration. He is well known for his work for the Post Office and his many designs for stamps.
