Description

Artist description:

A painter, born in Norton-on-Tees, County Durham, he began work as an apprentice sign-writer and in 1942 joined the Royal Navy. After four years in the Far East, he enrolled as student at Middlesbrough School of Art which he financed by working as a commercial artist designing exhibition stands. In 1952 he was appointed as a lecturer at Loughborough College of Art and Design, a position he was to hold for over thirty years. His first solo exhibition was held at Middlesbrough Art Gallery in 1962, which resulted in a complete sell out. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1986 and a full member three years later. Gamble is a Freeman of the City of London, a Liveryman and Gold Medallist of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, and a Member of the Art Workers’ Guild. His work is held in many private and public collections including HM Queen Elizabeth and Lloyds of London.
