Artist description:
A painter and muralist born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Coxon served with the Cavalry in Palestine in the World War I then studied at Leeds College of Art, from 1919 to 1921 and at the RCA from 1921 to 1925. During his time at the RCA, Coxon also attended private lessons at Leon Underwood’s Brook Green School. In 1926 he married Edna Ginesi with Henry Moore as his best man. In 1927 he formed, with Henry Moore, Leon Underwood and others, the short-lived British Independent Society.
He held his first solo exhibition in 1928 with the London Artists’ Association at the Cooling Galleries. A member of the London Group and the Chiswick Group he was an Official War Artist with the Royal Navy in World War II. He was a member of the LG and also showed at the Leicester Galleries and with his wife, Edna Ginesi was given a retrospective show at the Michael Parkin Gallery, London in 1985. Examples of his work are in the collections of the IWM, Cheltenham Art Gallery, the Hepworth Wakefield, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery, London.
