Description

Artist description: John Burningham is one of the UK’s most distinguished illustrators whose appeal is recognised the world over. Born in Farnham, Surrey, he attended the alternative Summerhill School, in Suffolk, where lessons were not compulsory. At 17, he became a conscientious objector, and avoided military service by joining the Friends Ambulance Unit. In 1954 he spent two years travelling through Italy, Yugoslavia and Israel, working at a variety of jobs including forestry work, farming, slum clearance, school building in Southern Italy and demolition work in Israel. He went to the Central School of Art in London in 1956, studying under Keith Vaughan and Laurence Scarfe and graduating in 1959. Unsure of his future, he returned to Israel where he worked on models and puppets for a film company until his return to England in the autumn of 1960 when his life as an illustrator began. He created posters for London Transport, drew cartoons for magazines and made Christmas card designs until the publication of his first book Borka: The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers in 1963 winning the Kate Greenaway Medal, an achievement he repeated with Mr Gumpy’s Outing (1970). Since then, he has written and illustrated many children’s books. He is also a freelance designer of murals, exhibitions models, magazine illustrations and advertisements. In 2012, he was shortlisted for a Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.
