Description

Artist description:

Druie Bowett was born in Ripon as Drucilla Glover and was one of the generation of artists who came to prominence in the years following the Second World War, her contemporaries included Terry Frost and Prunella Clough. She attended Harrogate School of Art where Jean-Georges Simon, newly arrived from Paris, opened her eyes to a modern European style; his influence was lifelong in the confident abstraction of her mature work.

Her Yorkshire roots were vital to her sense of identity and her paintings featured in many of the prestigious Midland Group exhibitions held in Nottingham during the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Her early work consisted mainly of landscapes and industrial views and she painted with the little-known Industrial Painters’ Group. During the 1950s, she concentrated on developing a distinctive style of near abstraction. By 1982, she had held over 20 solo exhibitions including at Wakefield City Art Gallery; Sheffield University; Nottingham Playhouse; Vaccarino Arte Contemporanea, Florence; the Royal Academy and the Crane Kalman, London.
