Piper, John: Brittany

Inspired by the gouache and cut marbled paper collages John Piper produced during a summer holiday in Brittany in 1960, this beautiful screenprinted cotton fabric was commissioned by the textile manufacturers David Whitehead Limited as part of their ‘Living Art Fabrics Range’. The design is partner to ‘Finistere’ from the same series and which we are also able to offer at: https://fiftiesart.com/product/piper-john-finistere-fabric/ The panel will be professionally mounted, glazed and framed on commissioning. It is rarely found in such excellent condition and is much less common than any of John Piper’s lithographs and screenprints, however limited the edition.

Piper, John: Irish Townscape

A lovely, atmospheric pen, ink and gouache sketch, signed and attractively framed. I am immensely grateful for the following description to Hugh Fowler-Wright, the well-known Piper collector, expert and writer who co-authored (with David Fraser Jenkins), ‘The Art of John Piper’, published by Unicorn and the Portland Gallery in 2015:

‘This sketch was most likely made when John Piper first visited Ireland in June 1938 with Myfanwy and hosts Laura and James Johnson Sweeney (art writer, curator at MOMA and later Director of the Guggenheim). They travelled and explored the country starting in Dublin where his friend John Betjeman was working. Heading for a holiday home in Donegal they took in a wide sway of Ireland from Cork in the south to Bundoran in the north. It was very much a holiday sketching trip although some oils of Georgian Irish country houses were finished back home and sent to be part of Piper’s one man exhibition with the Buchholtz Gallery NY in 1945. Piper returned to Ireland in subsequent decades to capture chapels, burial mounds, peat bogs, round houses, early carvings and crosses. In typical fashion Piper found similarities and commonality in aspects of the terrain and feel of parts of Ireland with other loved locations such as Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, Devon and internal Brittany.’

Piper, John: Finistere – SOLD

A distinctive, beautiful and extremely rare screenprinted fabric design commissioned by the textile manufacturers David Whitehead to contribute towards their ‘Living Art Fabrics Range’ which they launched in 1969, a year before their takeover.

Its abstract style and use of vibrant colours are distinctly ‘painterly’, and the design is partner to the ‘Brittany’ fabric from the same series which we are also able to offer at: https://fiftiesart.com/?s=brittany Both were influenced by John Piper’s holidays in the area which inspired paintings, collages and lithographs.

The fabric is in perfect condition with strong colours, the right hand selvedge is available with the printed details ‘Finistere’ by John Piper’. It is much more difficult to source in this condition than any of John Piper’s lithographs and screenprints, however limited the edition. The panel is professionally mounted, glazed and framed on commission. The price quoted is for one complete panel of the design.
